Green Global – India
In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, there remains the desire and the goals to ensure that top carbon emitters cut back on their overall emissions. The latest report comes from India, and it is fascinating to know that India has been able to reduce the carbon emissions, for the past few months since the pandemic led to a shut down of many industries. A report in the Hindu times, quotes a senior official in the environment ministry, as confirming that emissions have been reduced by at least 8%.
This against the backdrop of the loss of lives due to the Covid 19 pandemic. The current numbers coming out of India, reflect that more than one hundred and fifty thousand people have died as a result of contracting the virus. India is in the top three of leading countries in pollution in the world, and news of reduced carbon emissions is one of the good news to come out of a sad circumstance.
Of course, it is noteworthy that the country did pledge to reduce their emissions intensity of GDP by thirty to thirty five percent by 2030. The government realises that the shut down of main industry polluters is also an opportunity for industries to adapt and come up with new ways of doing business.
